Moscow - two grand slam winner, Marat Safin tennis is no longer wrestle. Former world number one it swerved into a politician after elected a member of the Russian Federal Parliament, called the Duma.
Safin, who retired from tennis in 2009 was a member of United Russia party led by Prime Minister who was in power, Vladimir Putin. Safin won one seat in the lower house of the Duma as a representative of Nyzhny Novgorod, a region located 500 km from the capital Moscow.
Since retiring, Safin work for the Russian Tennis Federation and Olympic Committee of Russia and has recently made its debut on the ATP Champions Tour tournament.
And sister of tennis player Dinara Safina claimed to have long thought of his career after retiring from tennis. And politics is a field of interest.
"I could come and make the ads there and here and pretend like I'm a celebrity, but it's not me," said Safin.
"This is a new life, new ways of thinking, ways of doing new things that have nothing to do with tennis or sports at all. But two different things have one thing in common and it is you need a character to do it."
Success Safin was elected as a member of parliament received a positive response from a former opponent in the field, Pete Sampras. Safin believes he will be successful through his new job.
"In 20 years, Marat would become President of Russia," said tennis legend from the United States as he joked.
"Marat was in his street naked. He is very intelligent and articulate and he has a good relationship with the people and that's half the battle to become a politician," said he.
